But, unfortunately, the egg does not always reach its destination. It happens that for a number of reasons it is implanted on the way to the uterus - on the wall of the ovary, abdominal cavity, cervix or, more often, in the fallopian tubes. Such a pregnancy is doomed to an interruption - deliberate surgical or, in extreme (neglected) cases, spontaneous.
What are the causes of ectopic pregnancy? What prevents a fertilized egg from reaching the finish line? The reasons can be different.
Changes and pathologies of the fallopian tubes
For this reason, the fetal egg is "stuck" in the fallopian tubes in the overwhelming majority of cases. Scars and adhesions on the walls are an obstacle to free movement through the pipes. Their mucous membrane loses its elasticity and its ability to contract. Thus, they can not push the egg further. Due to the deformation of the tubes, the lumen is narrowed, so that the progress of the blastocyst becomes impossible.
What causes scars (or salpingitis)? This can be a variety of reasons: abortion, inflammatory diseases, sexual infections. Often the scars remain after surgical interventions in this area. Also, an obstacle can create tumors of the reproductive organs. Today, spikes are successfully removed by laparoscopy.
Anatomical features of organs of the reproductive system
It happens that the womb of the mother is initially physiologically "wrong": too long or extremely tortuous. This also creates additional difficulties in promoting the fetal egg. It even happens that there are "superfluous" pipes or openings in them, or the mother tubes or the uterus itself are underdeveloped (infantilism, aplasia).
The reason for these anatomical disorders is most often the unfavorable course of the intrauterine development of a woman. Perhaps her mother during pregnancy was taking illegal medicines or drinking alcohol, being exposed to radioactive radiation or having had a sexual infection. These anomalies are congenital.
Intrauterine spirals are the most popular means of mechanical contraception among women giving birth. Their action is reduced to the fact that they interfere with the fixation of the egg in the uterine cavity - as a result, pregnancy does not occur. However, spirals are not protected from ectopic implantation. The risk of such a side effect increases when the spiral is worn for longer than the prescribed time.
Oral contraceptives are good because they are suitable even for nulliparous girls. But since these are still hormonal drugs, many seek to reduce their use to minimal doses. That's why girls often resort to so-called mini-pili (OK, not containing estrogen). But these drugs are only for certain categories of women (lactating, smoking, after 35 and so on). If you do not enter any of these groups, then take combined oral contraceptives. Then the risk of developing an ectopic pregnancy will be significantly reduced.
Conception "in vitro" (artificial)
IVF (in vitro fertilization) has become a salvation for many infertile couples. Nevertheless, it is recommended to resort to this method only on indications. However paradoxical it may sound, every 20th in vitro fertilization develops outside the uterus.
It is known that when the level of progesterone in a woman's blood is insufficient, pregnancy does not come at all or can not develop further. In some cases, for the same reason, ectopic pregnancy occurs. Because progesterone is not enough, the fallopian tubes contract very weakly, and the fetal egg does not advance to the uterus.
In addition, among other possible causes of ectopic pregnancy, mother smoking is considered (nicotine reduces the ability of fallopian tubes to contract), douching, impaired development of the fetal egg.
It should be said that the cause of ectopic pregnancy in a woman is not always established by doctors. The older a woman, the higher the risk of developing a pathological pregnancy. The likelihood of an ectopic pregnancy increases 12 times, if in the past a woman has already experienced this pathology.
Try to exclude your possible causes of ectopic pregnancy, and as soon as possible, go through the first ultrasound to calm yourself: The study reveals exactly where the fetal egg was attached.
