Childbirth in the water

Childbirth in the water - pros and cons, technique, contraindications

Childbirth in the water - quite already and not new. The first time that people can give birth in the water, like a dolphin or a mermaid, heard back in the 60's. The Russians tried, namely Mr. Charkovsky, who popularized this kind of birth. Soon maternity homes with baths and Jacuzzi spread in many countries around the world. However, after some time, the birth in the water ceased to be a highlight, all returned to the habitual way to give birth "on land," and then again remembered and began talking about waterbirth. And now they are talking about this in every corner. The women giving birth are praised with delightful impressions, and physicians are all arguing about the pros and cons, about the advantages and dangers.

Theory and practice

Theoretical justification for the benefits of childbirth in the water abound. Even Archimedes' law was attributed here. Thanks to him (the law), water alleviates the pain at birth, because the body that is completely in the water, acts as a pushing force, proportional to the volume of fluid displaced by the body. That's why it's easier to bear the pain in the water, and not on land.

In general, it is difficult not to agree with the fact that water alleviates the suffering of a woman during the period of labor. But it's about another - about giving birth to water, that is, the child after ejection falls into the water, rather than the air.

Proponents of waterborne theorists believe that if a newborn enters a warm familiar aquatic environment, then this removes the birth stress, which is often compared with the state of the astronaut, on whom the overload operates. It is the births in the water, in their opinion, that minimize birth injuries to a minimum, because the child at the birth in the water "saves" energy costs to combat gravity. Theoretically, it is also believed that the traditional way of giving birth causes the baby to suffer from loud sounds, unfamiliar smells and bright light, and also the child burns the lungs with oxygen.

However, practice claims quite the opposite. From the womb the baby gets into the world of "stunning" silence - studies show - because the background noise in the uterus is comparable with the noise of the shop, where 10 jackhammers work. And the impact of gravity has opposite opinions. In the process of childbirth the baby experiences colossal pressure, so when born, he inevitably feels a sense of relief, which has nothing to do with whether he was in water or on land.

There are very few comparative studies of water and conventional births. There is only data on the comparison of 250 deliveries in different ways. According to these results, it was found that there was practically no difference during childbirth. Is that women giving birth to water were more calm, because the psychological attitude to painless childbirth in the water is of great importance.

Positive and negative

The most positive moment for a woman in water delivery is the less painful course of labor. Skirmishes in water are compared with incoming waves. It is in the water (if of course the volumes of the bath allow) it is easiest to choose the most painless pose, free from external stress. Yeah, warm water has fantastic ability to relax.

Other factors are considered positive moments of waterbirth. For example, many "mothers in water" note the fact of a reduction in the first period of childbirth several times in comparison with the usual birth. That's why even those mothers who do not want to give birth in water do not want to be recommended, the period of labor is to be spent in a warm bath, and with attempts to move to bed. But are you always provided with a pool with a Jacuzzi in the maternity hospital?

Also, some women claim that it is due to the birth in the water that it is possible to avoid unnecessary medical intervention. Like, stimulation, episiotomy, forceps and the like in the pool are not used. Is it really cloudless in reality? The answer is two-valued. Childbirth is an unpredictable "view." You should be ready for the most different pleasant, and not so, surprises.

The main negative for water births occurs in newborns. Fortunately, statistics does not shock the figures. The risk of complications in any kind is unpredictable, and in water it only increases. The most important concern is the ingress of water into the baby's lungs. Exodus is pitiable. However, experienced specialists say that it is safe to give birth in water. The child breathes in the air already in the air.

Serious complication of water delivery may be a separation of the umbilical cord and bleeding, as well as infection of the newborn, because rarely water in the pool remains sterile for a long time. Already after 3-4 hours in her swarm dangerous sticks. But many people say that the air environment is even more non-sterile and saturated with foreign bacilli and microbes.

To be or not to be

But the answer to this question is always for the parents. But even with a strong desire to give birth in water, there are factors that prevent you from doing it:

  • diseases of the cardiovascular system;
  • Clinically narrow pelvis and large fetus;
  • diabetes mellitus;
  • gestosis;
  • placenta previa;
  • risk of fetal hypoxia;
  • psychoemotional unbalance of a woman.

In all these cases, the birth in the water is strictly contraindicated. If you do not face any of the above, and the desire to give birth in the water is justified, is supported by knowledge and skills - then forward. Only take into account the main nuances:

  • a qualified midwife should be leading water supplies, and most importantly, an experienced midwife;
  • water delivery is best performed in the maternity hospital, equipped with special pools for parturient women;
  • the bath for childbirth should be deep enough (at least 60 cm) and wide (2, 2 m);
  • the temperature of the water in the tub should be at least 37 degrees, but not much higher, because temperature extremes are dangerous for the health of both mother and child;
  • water should be changed every 3-4 hours, otherwise it starts to bloom intestinal stick;
  • Ensure strict adherence to antiseptics in the bathroom;
  • it is unacceptable to apply any medicines when giving birth to water, so that if you accidentally inhale water from the pool, the baby does not swallow dangerous medicines;
  • Additional medical care should be insured, especially if waterborne births occur in a home bath;
  • Watch your status; if you feel discomfort in the water, then you should leave the bath immediately;
  • listen to your midwife; you have to trust her.

Very often women in the water endure the stage of bouts, but give birth already outside the pool. Which way of giving birth is closer to you - decide for yourself. However, this should be a deliberate joint decision. You, your relatives and attending physician at water births should become a single whole: mutual trust and understanding are the main component of successful delivery.

Good luck to you!
