ICSI

Iksi fertilization is a difference from IVF, how is it done?

IVF as the last chance to conceive a child

So, the future parents rejected the adoption and decided to use the concept of the birth of the baby, which was not quite usual in terms of conception. Auxiliary reproductive technologies (ART) - this is the last chance to give birth to a genetically your boy or girl, whose conception occurs in a test tube.

You should know that the first such conception occurred in the 80s of last century. Then the reproductive branch of medicine and the new specialization of doctors - embryologist-reproductologist - began to be formed.

In general, according to statistical data, in 40% of infertile couples treatment in this way ends with pregnancy. True, there can be several attempts at this.

With in vitro fertilization, a woman extracts from the ovaries mature eggs. The man gives his sperm. Then specialists in the laboratory in specially created conditions release the egg and spermatozoa. There is a process similar to that which is called conception in the female body during sexual intercourse. That is, a strong healthy sperm fertilizes an egg. Then, a few days after the division, doctors place this egg in the woman's womb. Probably, she will not get accustomed to the first time, she will not attach herself to the walls of the uterus. Then the attempts are repeated. If the egg has taken root in the uterus, then the course of this pregnancy does not differ from the usual one.

What is ICSI

Today the inability to conceive a child in a natural way is not only the fault of a woman. Often men also suffer from this problem.

Male sperm is capable of fertilization, when in one milliliter it contains 20 million spermatozoa. One third of them must be mobile, have a normal structure. If there is severe sperm disturbance, then the couple are offered a new method of artificial insemination. It is called an intracytoplasmic injection of a sperm into an egg (ICSI). The bottom line is that the previously selected strong spermatozoon is inserted into the egg with a microscope in a so-called manual way, that is, using microsurgical instruments. With ICSI, each mature oocyte (ovule) needs only one spermatozoon.

When using this method, pregnancy occurs even with complex and incurable forms of infertility in men. It's about retrograde ejaculation (when the sperm during ejaculation falls not in the urethra, but in the bladder). In this case, viable spermatozoa are removed from the urine and ICSI-fertilization is performed. There are cases when the sperm does not contain spermatozoa at all. This phenomenon is called aspermatism. Previously, in such cases, donor sperm was used, but ICSI gives a chance to conceive genetically your baby.

The ICSI method involves the treatment of sperm, which allows you to select at least 1 moving sperm.

The methodology gives a chance to become parents to people who under no circumstances could have their children. Previously, they would have used donor sperm services. And this is psychologically unacceptable for many couples.

What is the difference between IVF and ICSI

So, What is the difference between two progressive reproductive methods of fertilization? If the deviations from the norm of sperm are insignificant, the method of IVF is used. This method is often used in practice in female infertility. And with male infertility, that is, clearly expressed bad quality of sperm, IKSI is used.

The difference between ICSI and IVF is also in the way of connecting male and female sex cells. With in vitro fertilization, both cells are allowed to "free float" into a test tube - and they merge themselves. And with IKSI conception is obtained as if forced, with the help of a reproductive physician in the laboratory.

Proceeding from the reproductive health of each pair, specialists select the method of artificial insemination individually for them. Therefore, it is not advisable to talk about what is better - IVF or ICSI.
