Ketone bodies: what is this?
They are a metabolic product formed in the liver, when fats are broken down and energy is released. Normally, these substances split further into the metabolism process. Their residue is excreted from the body, therefore, as a result of the analysis, urine is not detected. Specialists ketone bodies called acetone, beta-hydroxybutyric acid and acetoacetic acid. Sometimes the rate of formation of ketones (ketones) in the body of a future mother increases, which leads to a high load on the liver. The barrier body simply does not have time to process them. Therefore, in the analysis of urine, they are found pregnant. Normally, there should not be ketone bodies. Specialists call their presence in urine ketonuria. Pathology is dangerous, because it threatens the health of the pregnant woman and her future child. Ketones begin to poison the body - developing intoxication.
Why ketone bodies appear during pregnancy
Identifying them in the urine is a sign of trouble. This means that the health of a pregnant woman is not all right. The main causes of the appearance of ketone bodies in the urine are: improper nutrition of the expectant mother (carbohydrate deficiency); weight loss as a consequence of severe form of toxicosis; eclampsia; metabolic disease; development of diabetes mellitus; anemia; hyperkatecholamineemia; poisoning of different etiologies; a violation of the liver and infectious diseases.
All the above conditions, which are indicated by ketones in urine, can lead to complications of pregnancy, pathologies in the development of the child. If the case is severe, then even involuntary miscarriage may occur.
How to determine ketone bodies during pregnancy
Today, the future mother no longer needs to take urine tests in the clinical laboratory to see if she is all right with these substances. You can just buy a test strip or test pills from the pharmacy network and conduct a study at home.
How to do it right? First, a woman needs to collect an average dose of morning urine in a sterile container. After that, a test strip is taken out of the pharmacy package and immersed in urine to the specified level. It is necessary to wait 15 seconds and after that to compare the color of the test strip with the scale of the standard.
Note that the color of the test strip can be from the saturated yellow (if ketones are absent) down to dark purple. It is necessary to know: the darker the hue of the strip, the higher the level of ketone bodies in the urine of a pregnant woman.
Similarly, ketones are analyzed using test pills. The tablet itself needs to be removed from the package. It is put on a blank paper sheet. On the pill using a pipette, you should drop one drop of fresh morning urine, wait 30 seconds. Then you need to compare the color of the reference scale and test pills. It can remain white, which indicates the normal course of pregnancy and the absence of ketones, or become a pale lilac (perhaps, violet) - this is already a sign of anxiety, evidence of the presence of ketone bodies in urine. In this case, the expectant mother is simply obliged to report the unpleasant result of the study to the obstetrician-gynecologist who observes her. The doctor, as a rule, directs the pregnant woman to re-study in the laboratory. If a woman is taking Phenazopyridine or Levadop preparations at this time, then this should be reported to the doctor, because such drugs can affect the result of the study, make it false-positive.
How to treat ketonuria
If the analysis confirms this diagnosis, the expectant mother will need to constantly take urine for analysis to the laboratory to control the level of ketone bodies. It should be understood that their presence is not a disease, but only its symptom. Therefore, the doctor reveals exactly the ailment that provoked ketonuria, and heals it.
