Monocytes are elevated during pregnancy in the blood

Monocytes are elevated during pregnancy in the blood - what does this mean?

About monocytes, their functions and the norm

This is the name of the leukocyte variety. As specific blood cells, monocytes protect the body from attacks by foreign biological agents. If a long time in an adult these blood components are increased, then this can be evidence of health problems. The very phenomenon of elevated monocyte levels is called monocytosis. It can be relative and absolute. The latter is said to be when their blood count exceeds 0, 7 ? 109 / l.

If we talk about relative monocytosis, then the level of these components remains within normal limits, but their presence in the common leukocyte formula increases. In other words, the number of monocytes remains the same, and the number of other types of white blood cells decreases.

Relative monocytosis is diagnosed when the proportion of monocytes is 8-10% higher than their usual number in the total number of leukocytes. This occurs with neutropenia and lymphocytopenia. Relative monocytosis in itself does not have a significant diagnostic value. But absolute monocytosis is evidence of an active immune response of the body in case of serious health problems. Elevated monocytes can be observed in such diseases: bacterial, fungal, viral infections in acute form; parasitic lesions in the form of tuberculosis, malaria, brucellosis, syphilis. Also monocytosis can testify to Crohn's disease and chronic inflammatory processes in the body. The same picture of blood is given by malignant diseases, for example, leukemia, myeloleukemia, lymphoma, polycythemia, osteomyelophybrosis, lymphogranulomatosis.

In women, monocytes can be elevated after gynecological operations.

It is worth knowing that the level of monocytes rises in the early stages of malignant growth. Sometimes this is the first signal of such ill-health.

Pregnancy and high monocytes

The majority of doctors regard pregnancy as a condition of immunodeficiency. But along with this many of the existing chronic inflammatory processes against the background of pregnancy fade.

Monocytes during pregnancy can increase, because during this period the main cells of immune protection of women are just them, not lymphocytes. This occurs against the background of a general increase in the level of leukocytes. Monocytes of expectant mothers excrete more anti-inflammatory substances (they are called cytokines) than ordinary women. In the peripheral blood of pregnant women, the amount of granulocytes will also increase.

Therefore, monocytosis in pregnant women at an early age can be the norm. Likely, this is evidence of the adaptation of the immune system of the female body to a new state. Activation of natural immunity provides reliable protection against bacterial infections. That's just the virus it concerns to a lesser extent. Therefore, if a woman is diagnosed with monocytosis, she is also advised to take tests for viral infections. And, first of all, we are talking about the Epstein-Barr virus, that is, type 4 herpes and the presence of signs of mononucleosis, which is caused by this virus.

If the abnormalities of monocytes from the norm are insignificant, then we can assume that the organism of the future mother independently cope with the attack of pathogenic microorganisms. When the deviations from the norm are significant, besides they are observed for a long period, this condition requires a detailed medical examination.

By itself, monocytosis is not a disease. It is just a testament to the presence of pathologies and diseases in the body. Therefore, the elimination of monocytosis is the treatment of the underlying disease, that is, its cause. Many experts emphasize that often a violation of the level of monocytes in the blood is due to the presence of parasites in the body. Therefore, it is worth to pass tests on their presence and do it without delay.
