Navel piercing during pregnancy

Is it possible to wear piercings in the navel during pregnancy?

Peculiarities of navel piercing during pregnancy

To begin with, if you have pierced the navel long before pregnancy, and the wound has fully healed, then no danger comes from it - nor for you, or for a future child. Another thing is if the navel piercing is performed during pregnancy. The thing is, that in this case, the healing of the puncture will be difficult. As the uterus increases, the skin on the abdomen will stretch, which greatly increases the diameter of the puncture. Moreover, the immune system of a woman during pregnancy is weakened, which increases the chances of infection of the puncture site. At the first symptoms of infection (redness, festering or swelling of the skin), immediately contact a specialist.

It is important to note that decorations in the navel also play a huge role during pregnancy. So, metal ornaments in the navel during late pregnancy can cause some inconvenience. That is why they are recommended to replace with ornaments from flexible polytetrafluoroethylene, which are not rejected by the body, and which can be worn right up to the birth itself. However, before the birth itself, the decoration still has to be removed, especially if you have scheduled cesarean section.

As for the question of piercing at different periods of pregnancy, in the first months of piercing does not cause you even the slightest concern. However, at later dates, as the abdomen increases, the puncture diameter can increase significantly, which in some cases leads to inflammation of the puncture site. Most often, inflammation occurs due to the fact that the skin on the abdomen is stretched, the navel bulges under the pressure of the uterus and the jewelry is constantly rubbing and clinging to clothing. That is why in late pregnancy it is better to give up wearing jewelry in the navel.

For the sake of justice, we note that in most cases, a woman can wear piercings up to 5-6 months of pregnancy, after which she replaces the jewelry with a more flexible, which bends under the pressure of the uterus. If you are afraid that the puncture site will overgrow, then instead of decorating you can wear a simple silk thread - this, of course, is not so beautiful, but the puncture does not exactly grow.

After removing ornaments from the navel, you still need to monitor the puncture site and constantly handle the antiseptic. To make the skin more elastic, use special creams and oils during pregnancy. Regularly clean the skin around the puncture with soapy water.

With regard to piercing the navel directly during pregnancy, then we recommend that you reject this idea. The fact is that it is very difficult to trust employees in the piercing salon, as the basic sanitary norms are rarely observed there. As a result, we can get hepatitis B and C and even HIV. And since the immunity of a pregnant woman is weakened, the infection penetrates with the "speed of light".

However, if piercing the navel during pregnancy is the dream of your life, at least make sure that the salon chosen by you meets the following requirements:

  • the piercer hands must necessarily be dressed in new gloves, which he will open with you;
  • All non-disposable instruments are disinfected in an autoclave;
  • in the cabin cleanly - there are no traces of dirt and blood, and also unpleasant odors;
  • a navel puncture is done with only one-time needles;
  • Piercing jewelry is in packages.

Only if these rules are observed, you can do navel piercing without risk to yourself and the baby. However, we still recommend that you wait with piercings until the end of pregnancy.
