Ovaries during pregnancy

Ovaries during pregnancy

What happens to the ovaries during pregnancy?

Ovaries have an important role in the female body: they produce the necessary sex hormones and serve as the cradle for the maturation of eggs. With the onset of pregnancy in one of the ovaries, a yellow body forms, which intensely produces progesterone - to preserve and develop a fertilized egg. The yellow body lives up to 12 weeks and then, having transferred its "powers" to the formed placenta, it gradually dies.

During the pregnancy, the ovaries suspend their activity, because there is no need for egg maturation: the goal is achieved - fertilization has taken place. To avoid new ovulation, the ovaries "go to sleep." At the same time, they increase slightly in size due to increased blood circulation and change their location: the ovaries displaced by the growing uterus leave the pelvic area leaving their original place. Now they rush a little up and forwards.

Ovarian diseases during pregnancy

As we see, The need for ovaries during pregnancy temporarily disappears, if one can put it this way. They simply turn off and stop functioning. Consequently, the feeling that many women feel as if the ovaries are ill during pregnancy often turns out to be false. After all, a woman most often does not even guess that there is no more there at the former location of the appendages. Usually, the pain in the ovaries during pregnancy is associated with the tension of the muscles supporting the uterus on both sides of the abdomen, and directly with the increase in the uterus in size, which makes the internal organs almost uncomfortable and uncomfortable - and you can even feel pain .

However, inflammation of the ovaries during pregnancy and other complications are quite possible if the pregnancy was already against their background. A woman may be troubled by various diseases associated with the ovaries:

  • oophoritis (adnexitis) - inflammation of the uterine appendages, in particular the ovaries, which is often combined with inflammation and fallopian tubes (salpingitis); occurs due to infection of the genital organs by infection (candidiasis, mycoplasmosis, chlamydia);
  • Cyst or swelling - the formation of protuberances on the body of the ovary, which presses on nearby tissues, thus causing painful sensations;
  • apoplexy - rupture of the ovary with a hemorrhage into the abdominal cavity.

When the ovaries are troubled in pregnancy

If the inflammation of the ovaries took place before pregnancy, then with its onset it will certainly worsen. Almost always, these diseases are accompanied by severe sharp pain, which can not only persist for a long time, but also grow and grow. In this case, treatment will be necessary - contact a doctor without waiting.

If from time to time you feel aching or even acute pain, which then disappears, then most likely the cause is not in the ovaries, but associated with the growing uterus during pregnancy. To calm down, such a pain will be helped by a calm deep inhale-exhalation or a change in the position of the body. Try to just lie down and relax - and maybe everything will pass. Make sure that the intestines are emptied daily, because constipation during pregnancy can also cause abdominal pains, similar to "ovarian".

And yet unhealthy ovaries during pregnancy can cause it to miscarry or interrupt. In addition, to treat inflammation still have to, and this does not benefit the future baby. That is why gynecologists strongly recommend to undergo a full medical (including gynecological) examination even at the stage of pregnancy planning.
