Prolactin and pregnancy

How does prolactin affect pregnancy?

Analyzes for hormones

The ability to conceive, the process of gestation, lactation depends on the hormonal background of the woman. And if she suffers from infertility, then the doctor must recommend taking tests for hormones. One of them is prolactin, which regulates lactation, which promotes breast enlargement during childbearing.

In medicine, prolactin is considered not fully studied hormone. All its functions in our body are not known. But science has clearly determined that it has a direct relationship to the childbearing function, because it has the greatest impact on the mammary glands. Without this hormone, the mammary glands will simply not be able to lactate.

It should be noted that prolactin can increase after sexual intercourse and even an ardent kiss, after smoking. Therefore the analysis on Prolactinum needs to be handed over in the morning, on an empty stomach. Do this in the first and second phase of the cycle.

When the hormone is higher than the norm after taking the tests, this can mean the presence of a benign brain tumor in the body and cause not the onset of ovulation.

The increased state of prolactin is called hyperprolactinemia. When the increase is not very large, then you need to know the level of macroprolactin, i.e. inactive prolactin. If a significant amount of macroprolactin is found, then pregnancy can be planned safely.

Treatment before pregnancy

So, hyperprolactinemia is detected. Then the gynecologist recommends that a woman undergo an MRI to confirm or exclude the presence of a tumor. Further therapy followed, which reduces the level of prolactin. If the tumor is detected, then the prescribed drugs should be drunk without a break during the year, and then become pregnant. Such long-term treatment is necessary to reduce the risk of prolactinoma growth in a future pregnancy. In the absence of a tumor, drugs are prescribed before pregnancy. After this therapy immediately stop.

Examinations after pregnancy

In pregnancy, the level of prolactin is not measured. In fact, in an interesting position, he is elevated in all women. It is necessary for the future child, as it affects the maturation of the pulmonary system.

The production of the hormone prolactin during pregnancy depends on the hormone estrogen. When the level of estrogen in the blood increases, a signal is sent to the brain to increase the secretion of prolactin. After all, there is a need to prepare a woman for breastfeeding. Thus, the action of prolactin during childbearing replaces the fat tissue of the mammary glands with a secretory one. From this they increase significantly in size. Subsequently, the production of maternal milk directly depends on prolactin.

By the way, this hormone through the mother's body gets into the period of pregnancy and into the body of the child. Therefore, in some babies right after birth, the mammary glands are slightly enlarged. This is not an excuse for my mother. All in a few days will pass by itself.

And the presence of an elevated level of this hormone in the blood of future and lactating mothers has the effect of anesthesia: more prolactin in the blood - less sensitivity to pain. This relationship is confirmed in the laboratory. Scientists also believe that prolactin makes mammary glands less sensitive

It should be noted that a high level of prolactin does not affect pregnancy fading and premature birth in any way. It is a myth.
