The placenta is low

The placenta is low - what are the threats and what to do?

One example of the complication of a healthy course of pregnancy may be a low placental location. What is it, for what reason arises and what threatens your baby? Let's try to find out together.

The role of the placenta in the development of the fetus

The placenta is a bridge between the mother and the fetus. Physicians call it a temporary body that supplies the baby with oxygen, all the substances necessary for its development, displays unnecessary components. The placenta also produces hormones for the progress of pregnancy, protects the baby from infections. In a word, This body serves as an instrument for the development and nutrition of the child from the organism of his mother.

When pregnancy is normal, the placenta develops at a distance of 6 cm from the inside of the cervix. If the placenta is located low, then doctors diagnose "low placentation."

What is low placentation?

What is placenta previa? This is one of the deviations from the normal course of pregnancy. Preposition or low placentation occurs when the placenta is in the lower part of the uterus. In this position, it can completely or partially cover the cervical canal.

The symptom of placenta previa may be bleeding. It occurs as a result of stretching the lower part of the uterus in the second half of pregnancy. Sometimes the placenta even begins to exfoliate - and then very heavy bleeding occurs. This state is a threat for both mother and child, but it does not occur very often. If bleeding can not be stopped, premature birth may begin. In certain situations, even if a couple of weeks remain before the expected date of delivery, they resort to Caesarean section to save both lives.

Types of presentation

The placenta previa in medicine is divided into 4 types:

  1. The placenta is located in the lower part of the uterus. At the same time, the possibility of childbirth remains natural.
  2. The lower edge of the placenta touches the cervical canal without closing it. In this case, too, the possibility of vaginal delivery remains.
  3. Partial overlapping of the placenta of the cervical canal. With this presentation, the births are performed with the help of Caesarean section.
  4. Complete overlapping of the placenta of the cervical canal. The delivery is by caesarean section.

In cases where ultrasound diagnosis in early pregnancy indicates that the placenta is located close to the cervix or touches it, do not worry. It is probably early to speak of placenta previa. Indeed, with the development of the fetus, the uterus expands, and the placenta can move away from its neck independently, in a natural way. Even if ultrasound shows a presentation on the 20th week of pregnancy, this does not mean that until the birth, everything will not fall into place without additional measures.

Every pregnant woman with a diagnosis of doctor presentation recommends taking an additional ultrasound at the 36th week of pregnancy. The result of the study may be a lack of presentation of the placenta, that is, the normalization of its condition.

Sometimes placenta previa can be absolutely asymptomatic for a woman. You can diagnose it only on ultrasound.

Risk factors

It should be noted that the occurrence of low presentation is more characteristic of the second, third pregnancy. Increased likelihood of this pathology is also a cesarean section in past births, placenta previa in past pregnancies.

A special risk factor is smoking a woman. Toxic substances in this case not only adversely affect the location of the placenta, and can lead to a delay in the mental development of the baby.

The further tactics of behavior of the pregnant woman depends on the presence of bleeding and the duration of pregnancy. If the diagnosis of "placenta previa" is placed in the second trimester of pregnancy and there is no bleeding, then most likely the doctor will recommend refraining from physical exertion.

In the presence of bleeding, you will most likely need to go to the hospital for the convenience of constant monitoring of the doctor. Perhaps, after stopping the bleeding, the doctor will suggest staying in the hospital until delivery. Do not refuse, referring to good health! Take care of yourself and the baby, because there is little to wait!
