What foods contain folic acid
Folic acid (or folacin) is a vitamin B9 well known to us. It is found in many food products, mainly vegetable, but also of animal origin. Most of the vitamin B9 is found in green vegetables: parsley, spinach, lettuce, leek, croutons, broccoli and other cabbage, green leaves, black currant leaves, raspberry, mint, dog rose, linden, birch, nettle, yarrow, etc. They are rich in other plants: beans, peas, horseradish, pumpkin, beets, carrots, cucumber, melon, banana, mushrooms (white, boletus, champignons).
Among the leaders in the content of folic acid, experts call different types of nuts: peanuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds.
A lot of vitamin B9 is also found in orange and apricot juice, products from wholemeal flour, barley.
As for products of animal origin, fish (especially salmon and tuna), liver, pork, beef, lamb, chicken and eggs, as well as dairy products such as cheese, milk, cottage cheese should be distinguished.
It is important to remember that during cooking, up to 90% of folacin, which is contained in raw food, is destroyed. Therefore, with a lack of vitamin B9, the body needs to be backed up in the form of tablets or food additives.
Why do people need folic acid?
The importance of folic acid for the human body can not be overemphasized, but in everyday life this is exactly what happens: this is by no means the most important vitamin, according to many of us. Meanwhile, folacin is extremely necessary for every person:
- with the help of folacin occurs the assimilation and decay of proteins in the body;
- Folic acid is needed for cell division;
- Vitamin B9 promotes normal hematopoiesis;
- helps to assimilate sugar and amino acids;
- is important in the formation of RNA and DNA, which are involved in the transmission of hereditary traits;

Pregnant women especially suffer from hypovitaminosis. The most common is a deficiency of folic acid, and it can cause serious problems during pregnancy:
- placental abruption, partial, or absolute;
- spontaneous abortion;
- frozen pregnancy;
- congenital malformations of the fetus (anencephaly, hydrocephalus, neural tube defect, hypotrophy, mental retardation, cleft lip).
How and when to take folic acid
Already in the first month of pregnancy, many organs of a future child are formed. Just the above-mentioned defects occur already from the first days of embryo development and can be formed during the entire first month of pregnancy. Often, women during this period do not even suspect that they are pregnant, and even more so, do not take any vitamin complexes, in particular, vitamins of group B. Meanwhile, for the normal development of the baby, it is extremely important to receive folic acid in sufficient quantities already in the very first after conception of the days. Immediately after the onset of pregnancy, there is a great need for the body in folin. After all, folic acid plays a very important role also in the formation of a healthy placenta.
So we draw conclusions that it is very important long before pregnancy to provide the body with folic acid. This vitamin does not have a cumulative effect, that is, we constantly need it. Therefore, prophylactic dosage of B9 is recommended for all women of childbearing age constantly (it is a question of natural organic, and not synthetic vitamins).
Keep in mind that not only the future mother needs this method, but also the future dad. After all, the lack of folin in the male body adversely affects the state of spermatozoa, in particular their mobility.
When planning a pregnancy, folic acid is usually prescribed approximately 3 months before the coveted sexual intercourse. Doctors consider this period sufficient to compensate for the shortage of folicin in almost all cases. But with dosages will have to understand each individual case separately.
Folic Acid Dosage
The dosage of folic acid when planning pregnancy depends on the individual needs of the body. Concerning tablets, all of them contain different dosage of folic acid - it depends on the drug or vitamin complex (almost all complexes for pregnant women include vitamin B9, the percentage of which in a specific tool must be taken into account with additional folicin intake).
The leading doctor can prescribe different dosages of folic acid for future parents: mom has a greater need for vitamin B9 than her father. It is not uncommon for the dosage of folic acid in pregnancy planning to exceed the preventive recommendations significantly: 1 tablet (1 mg) can be administered 1 to 4 times a day or the same dose in other variations (for example, 2 tablets twice a day), and also only in the first phase or continuously during all 3 months. Folacin is taken when planning immediately after a meal. High dosage can be maintained in the first weeks of pregnancy. Doctors in such cases are more reinsured: overdoses, as we already mentioned, are practically impossible, and deficiency of folic acid in pregnancy is fraught with serious consequences.
