What is ESR?
The abbreviation of ESR stands for: erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Sometimes in the literature there is a reduction in ESR (the reaction of erythrocyte sedimentation). ESR, in fact, is one of the nonspecific indicators of the blood state. To consider this issue, let's first find out what red blood cells are?
Erythrocytes are red blood cells formed in the red bone marrow of a blood cell. The main function of erythrocytes is the transfer of oxygen and nutrients to tissues and organs. The major part of these cells is occupied by the hemoglobin protein, to which the erythrocytes owe their red color. The lifespan of erythrocytes is on average 120 days. "Aged" and "worn out" cells settle in the spleen and liver, where they are destroyed. At this time in the red bone marrow is the development of new red blood cells.
The human blood contains a large number of red blood cells. For example, in a man with a body weight of 60 kg, their total number is equal to 25 trillion! For the convenience of diagnosis, it was decided to examine the content of these cells in one cubic millimeter (1 ?l). Determination of the number of red blood cells is carried out with the help of a general (clinical) blood test.
So what does the rate of erythrocyte sedimentation mean? Let's imagine that fresh blood was poured into a thin glass (vertically arranged) tube. We will see how the erythrocytes begin to settle on the bottom of the tube under the action of gravity. As a result, red blood cells will settle on the bottom, and transparent plasma will remain on top. The number of erythrocytes (in millimeters), which in 1 hour will sink to the bottom, and represent, in our case, interest.
In non-pregnant women, the ESR rate is up to 15 mm / h. This indicator can increase with inflammatory processes, the development of tumors, kidney diseases, anemia, bleeding, including menstrual bleeding. If a woman has an excess of protein in the blood plasma, her viscosity increases, the structure of erythrocytes is disrupted, and ESR, on the contrary, decreases. It is also understated by people who prefer vegetable food or starvation.
In pregnancy, the rate of erythrocyte sedimentation rate may both increase and decrease. It is considered the norm if the ESR index of a pregnant woman is up to 45 mm / h.
During the first six months of pregnancy, there is usually a decrease in ESR. True, a number of women, on the contrary, have an increase in this indicator. But by the end of pregnancy ESR increases almost 3 times. There is also an increase in the early postpartum period.
It happens that ESR, for some reason, is incorrectly defined. In order to confirm or refute the assumptions about obvious violations on the part of health, it is necessary to submit a second analysis. And do it better in another laboratory.
