About a visit to a female doctor
Everything depends on how the birth was taking place. If they were traditional, and the postpartum period is normal, the gynecologist is recommended to visit when the spotting ends, their character will return to normal. It is necessary for the doctor to examine the birth canal, assess the condition of the neck and internal seams, if they are superimposed.
As a rule, lochia (postpartum discharge from the genital tract) on average lasts 6-8 weeks. In the first 5-7 days, they are abundant, similar to menstrual. Further, their number decreases, the uterus clears, shrinks. From the third week they become yellowish-brown. By the end of 6-7 weeks, discharge comes to the prenatal rate. That's when you should go to see a female doctor, that is, after 6-8 weeks.
The gynecologist will ask the patient about the course of childbirth, the postpartum period, will conduct an examination on the chair. He will assess the condition of the external genitalia, the walls of the vagina and the cervix. If the seams on the walls of the vagina are untenable, this leads to the appearance of fistulas, that is through holes. They can be located between the vagina and rectum.
The doctor will take smears from the cervix and vagina. The study will help determine the onset of inflammation, if it occurs. Palpating the ovaries, the body of the uterus, the doctor will assess their size and consistency. The beginning of the endometrium is indicated by a painful, flabby and enlarged uterus.
If a woman was given a cesarean section, then to the doctor after discharge from the hospital they need to apply earlier, without waiting for the expiry of 6-8 weeks. The contraction of the uterus is slower, because an incision was made and seams were applied, which violate the structure of the muscle fibers. The doctor must make sure that the stitch heals well, that in the long run he will not cause trouble to the woman.
About performing ultrasound after childbirth
In many maternity hospitals, an ultrasound is performed before discharge. The procedure is necessary to assess the condition of the uterine cavity, the presence of clots and placenta in it. Ultrasound determines uterine contraction, allows to diagnose complications at an early stage.
If blood clots are found in the uterus, this prevents the body from fully reducing. They, moreover, are the optimal environment for the development of microorganisms, contribute to the occurrence of complications, for example, the subinvolution of the uterus. This is the name of a condition when its size exceeds the permissible postnatal norm. To eliminate the problem, the obstetrician-gynecologist can prescribe antibiotic therapy, and sometimes even surgical treatment.
About the urgent need to see a doctor
Sometimes a woman should not wait 6 weeks after delivery to come to see a female doctor. The reasons that make it as soon as possible can be:
- Increase in body temperature. It is not always associated with catarrhal diseases of the newly mummy. It is necessary, first of all, to exclude endometritis, that is postnatal inflammation of the mucous layer of the uterus. Not begun on time treatment of this pathology can lead to dangerous consequences. At an elevated body temperature, it is necessary to exclude inflammation in the seam area, if they have a woman.
- Changing the nature of the selections. Newly mum should be alerted by increased secretion, the appearance of unpleasant odor and pus. This is also evidence of what began inside the inflammatory process.
- The appearance of pain in the lower abdomen and in the area of ??the postoperative suture. They may indicate pathological changes in the uterus, inflammation of the suture.
- Allocations from the seam after a caesarean section, engorgement, redness around it. This indicates the attachment of the infection, the development of inflammation and requires the appointment of adequate treatment.
